What I feel is being said in the quote that I saw in Michaela's blog, is that he is going along with what life is giving him. I feel that this quote can be relating back to God. By saying that he will stay on this course until he knows something certain....that something certain can be an afterlife. And when he says or until I at least know nothing is certain, can be that he finds out their is no afterlife.

I agree that there is something almost religious in his devotion to his pursuit of truth; regarding any subject.
I like the concept you propose of D's allusion to God in subtle ways throughout his dissertation. Personally, when reading I didn't recognize any subtleties indicated this discussion of God,etc. but I think the beauty of D is depending on what you're looking for, the meaning is within your desired/necessary interpretation. to guide you to find the truth in whatever your question may be...
