"The next thing to be considered is, how bodies produce ideas in us; and that is manifestly by impulse, the only way which we can conceive bodies operate in."
I feel that when we talk about the mind and body this phrase is very specific to that. He is talking about how he feels that bodies operate on their own, and do not use the mind. He talks about how they operate by impulse, but I feel he is completly wrong. The mind is clearly used in the operation of the body, and I also feel that he contradicts himself because he talks about and refers to God throughout the two books. Any person that is going to refer to God must know that the mind and the body operate as one.

I feel the same way I think that the body most definitely operates in conjunction with the mind. Back then they didnt know as much as we do today in science that the mind controls how our body works.
Just like Danielle said, back in those days, medical research was still premature, so their was almost no way to prove that the brain control our body. But anyway, I am going to have to disagree about how anyone referring to God must always that the body is "one". Even though he says that the mind controls the body, this is scientifically incorrect. As I've just mentioned the brain is the one that controls almost everything, not the mind. The mind is just our personality, preferences and generally who we are. The brain takes care of everything else.
